MLK Tournament at U of Michigan, 1/19/02
Results: Northwestern B
(Jordan Burgess, John Etmekjian, Robert Flaxman, Jason Selvey)
MLK sucked last year because we
spent all this time writing a packet which was then quietly discarded in favor of packet
after packet of largely unanswerable questions (this is supposed to be mACF, not straight
ACF). In the wake of that debacle, we were promised that our questions would be used
this year.
As it turned out, they largely weren't. We sent three teams, and
only our (NU B) packet was used at all, and even then I counted five tossups, two tossups
which sounded like reworkings of bonuses, and four bonuses - only about a quarter of one
packet, in other words.
It also sort of sucked because MLK, being at Michigan and therefore
fairly centrally located as far as east of the Mississippi goes, draws a lot of pretty
good competition, including Kentucky, Pitt, Chicago, Illinois, and of course the
Michiganers themselves, which all translates to "our team went 4-10, and that's after
2-1 in the playoffs." Probably one of the weirdest notes of the day was the
fact that I managed to outscore the team in two separate games - scoring three
tossups, 30 points, in our 25-point effort against Ohio State in Round Six, and 60 points
in our 55-5 defeat of NU C in the playoffs.
Favorite Tossup: There were some nice ones, though as you'd
expect I got much of the trashy knowledge and not massive amounts else (see below).
I think my favorite was probably Tommy Boy, because I got it off of some lead-in like
"the main character takes a history test and fills in the name of a signer of the
Declaration of Independence..." and then buzz.
Favorite Bonus: The problem with these two days of
tournaments is that by the time they're done I've forgotten the first one if I didn't
write it down. And I don't write down bonuses, even good ones, so I can't say what
my favorite bonus was because I don't remember any.
Worst Neg: Flora Bloom as Leopold's wife. It's
really Molly, of course - what I've been unable to figure out so far is why the hell I was
so convinced it was Flora.
